Gambling is like many other addictive behaviours that are connected with visual as well as bodily felt senses, in addition to the perceived excitement or expectations of winning. The rational mind of course knows that the odds are stacked against the gambler. Therapy is aimed at dissociating the visual and bodily senses as well as the emotional need of excitement and or need of winning. This is why the type of therapy I engage you in is particularly helpful with a gambling problem because gambling addiction is often not helped with just “talk” therapy. Process-oriented experiential therapy engages the mind and body, hence breaking the unconscious associations and unhelpful identifications.
